Awareness

A resolution passed in Michigan, H.R. 160, declares October 28, 1997, as Multiple Myeloma Awareness Day in the state and recognizes the efforts of the McCarthy Cancer Foundation.

Research

California enacted A.B. 1554, which creates the Cancer Research Fund ("Fund") within the state, and appropriates $2 million to the Fund for cancer research. This legislation also establishes the Cancer Research Council to be comprised of members appointed by the state Director of Health Services.

Also in California, the Cancer Research Act of 1997, S.B. 273, requires that the monies in the state Cancer Research Fund be expended for research with respect to the cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and cure of cancer. The legislation also requires the state Department of Health Services ("Department") to establish and administer the state Cancer Research Program ("Program"), the state Cancer Research Council, and a research peer review panel. The duties of the Department include periodic evaluations of the Program, dissemination of research results, and an annual report to the state legislature on the status of research grants, and the goals and accomplishments of the Program.
