Third-Party Reimbursement

Vermont passed a law (H.B. 255) that requires certain insurers, including HMOs, to provide coverage for medically necessary growth cell stimulating factor injections taken as part of a prescribed chemotherapy regimen for the treatment of cancer.

Research

New Jersey enacted A.B. 1139, which authorizes the Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to issue license plates with the slogan, "Conquer Cancer," and an emblem indicating support for finding new methods of treating and preventing cancer. Monies collected from the license plates are to be deposited in the state's Cancer Research Fund to: (1) reimburse the DMV for all costs related to the "Conquer Cancer" license plates, and (2) support cancer research projects approved by the Commission on Cancer Research.

Awareness

Three states—Hawaii, Michigan, and Pennsylvania—adopted resolutions relating to general cancer issues. Hawaii (H.C.R. 205) requests that the Office of Hawaiian Affairs urge all Native Hawaiians to participate in routine cancer screening and testing programs. Michigan (H.R. 51) proclaimed May 31, 1997, as Childhood Cancer Survivors Day. In Pennsylvania, H.R. 146 declared June 1997 as Leukemia Awareness Month, while H.R. 175 designated June 1, 1997, as National Cancer Survivors Day in recognition of cancer survivors and their families.
