Cancer Registries

Legislation enacted in Alaska (H.B. 114) allows the state Department of Health and Social Services ("Department") to inspect health care records maintained by certain health care professionals and facilities that would identify cancer patients. Data obtained must remain confidential and may not be further disclosed, except that the Department may provide the data for clinical, epidemiological, or other public health research.

With the passage of H.B. 2181 in Kansas, the Secretary of the state Department of Health and Environment is authorized to collect data pertaining to all cancer occurring in the state. The information in the cancer registry is confidential, but data on a resident of another state may be released to that state's registry if confidentiality is assured. A panel is to be established to determine policies for the release of non-confidential data and to review requests for confidential data.
